Job Description

The projectionist is the primary person responsible for the execution of a flawless film and/or multi-media presentation in the auditorium.

There are various stages of becoming a projectionist. The projectionist-in-training must complete an extensive training program under the supervision of the Lead Projectionist before they become certified as a (full) Projectionist.  The certification process and test is performed under the supervision of the Technical Director.

The candidate learns how to prepare the auditorium for an event. This includes the ability to set up for a variety of technical needs such as microphone placement, laptop projection configuration and all “B” chain formats.  After the student has mastered these skills, they must learn the proper method of handling film.  This includes film cleaning, minor film repair work, noting changeover notches/scenes and build-up.  Next, the student must learn how to operate the 16 mm projector and 35 mm projectors.  They also will begin to perform a complete run-through and how to write film condition reports. After the performance, the projectionist secures the building, breaks the film down and places film canisters in the crate for shipping.

A projectionist is always the first to arrive for an event.  They make sure the auditorium is at proper temperature and that all the equipment and film is ready for exhibition.  Sound levels are checked and noted.  The projectionist also contacts the Lead Projectionist and other student employees if someone fails to report for their shift. 

Pay for a projectionist is $15.00 per hour based on job performance and/or experience.  Hours are 8-12 per week, primarily nights and weekends.

Projectionist receives pay while training.
