Jessie Matthews Memorial Award in Art

Award Type: Award

Award Amount: Varies

Eligibility: Studio Art Students

Award Term: Summer

Awarded By: Faculty Nomination

This award endowment was given to the department by Russ Pitman in honor of Jessie Matthews, a Houston antiques business woman, to recognize outstanding achievement and/or distinguished merit in painting, drawing, printmaking, or sculpture.

Miss Jessie owned an antiques business for years on Westheimer in Houston, Texas, named “Caroline Antiques;” so named since the former location was on Caroline Street where they started the business.  Her husband, Captain Clavy Mason Matthews was a ship’s captain in the Merchant Marine and was the source of acquiring good antiques in European ports.

Miss Jessie was a prolific artist, supplying a wide selection of her paintings for sale in her shop.  This award is given to one studio art student.
